This modern extension to a Victorian terrace house in Stoke Newington formed the second part of a three-phase project. The works saw substantial structural interventions to create an open-plan kitchen, living and dining area to the rear of the house, with internal floor height lowered to create a ‘level’ internal-external threshold. The effect of this intervention was to create spectacular double heights spaces.

Integrated bench seating to the dining area is complimented by ‘pocket sliding’ windows which when opened fully, blur the boundaries between internal and external spaces.

The extension here is clad in Portland stone and reflects the internal design which is of a minimalist, sharp and clean aesthetic.

James was project architect whilst working for Gresford Architects, and oversaw the development of the design from initial concept through construction.
